At Muffin & Poppy, one of the most important parts of raising our British Shorthair kittens is ensuring they are gently and positively socialised from an early age. While many people focus on appearance or pedigree, a kitten’s temperament and confidence are often shaped by the experiences they have in those first few weeks of life.
That is why our kittens are raised in a real family home, surrounded by everyday life, regular handling, gentle interaction, and supervised time with both children and other pets.
The Importance of Early Socialisation
Research in animal behaviour shows that kittens go through a critical socialisation period during their first weeks of life. During this stage, positive experiences with people, sounds, handling, and environments can help shape them into calm, confident, and affectionate adult cats.
Kittens who are exposed to gentle human interaction early on are often more adaptable when they move into their forever homes. They tend to cope better with visitors, children, household activity, grooming, vet visits, and everyday handling.
We often find that family-raised kittens are naturally more relaxed, sociable, and trusting because they see humans not as something unfamiliar, but as a normal and comforting part of daily life.
Why Interaction with Children Can Be So Valuable
Children and kittens can form incredibly special bonds. When interactions are calm and supervised, children help kittens become accustomed to different voices, movements, and handling styles. This can help kittens grow in confidence and become more tolerant, affectionate companions.
There are also wonderful benefits for children themselves. Studies have shown that growing up around animals can help children develop empathy, emotional awareness, gentleness, and a sense of responsibility. Cats can provide companionship, comfort, and even help reduce stress and anxiety in both children and adults.
Some of the most heartwarming moments in our home are seeing the quiet trust that develops between our kittens and our grandchildren — whether that is during playtime, cuddles on the sofa, or simply sitting together peacefully.
Why Supervision Is Essential
While socialisation is incredibly important, it must always be done carefully and responsibly.
Both kittens and young children can be unpredictable. Kittens are delicate, energetic, and still learning boundaries, while younger children may not yet fully understand how to handle animals gently or recognise signs that a kitten needs space.
For this reason, we always supervise interactions closely, especially with younger children. Gentle handling, calm play, and teaching children to respect a kitten’s boundaries are all essential parts of creating safe and positive experiences for everyone involved.
Good socialisation should never feel overwhelming or stressful for the kitten. The goal is always to build confidence gradually in a safe, loving environment.
Raising Confident, Loving Companions
At Muffin & Poppy, we believe that raising kittens is about far more than simply caring for them physically. It is about helping shape confident, affectionate companions who are ready to become part of family life.
Those small everyday moments — cuddles on the sofa, playful afternoons with children, gentle brushing, quiet naps beside familiar voices — all help build the trust and temperament that lasts a lifetime.
And for us, that is one of the most meaningful parts of what we do.
