At Muffin & Poppy, we believe the environment a kitten is raised in during those first precious weeks plays a huge part in shaping the cat they will become. While health, nutrition, and veterinary care are essential, a kitten’s early emotional and social development is just as important.
That’s why all of our British Shorthair kittens are raised in the heart of our family home, surrounded by everyday life, gentle handling, familiar voices, and plenty of love from all generations of our family.
Being raised in a home environment offers so many lifelong benefits. Our kittens become naturally familiar with everyday household sounds such as televisions, hoovers, kitchen noises, doors opening and closing, and the rhythm of family life. This early exposure helps them grow into calm, confident cats who adapt more easily to their new homes.
Regular interaction with adults and children also helps them develop trust, affection, and positive associations with human contact. They learn that cuddles, grooming, playtime, and being handled are all safe and enjoyable experiences, something that makes a huge difference when they join their forever families.
It also helps us understand each kitten’s unique personality. By living so closely with them every day, we get to know who is the explorer, who is the cuddler, who is playful, and who is more laid back, allowing us to make thoughtful matches with future owners.
Watching our granddaughter Emily with Rose is a lovely reminder of how powerful these early bonds can be. Rose is usually full of energy and always on the move, yet with Emily she seems completely content, happy to sit, cuddle, and simply enjoy being close.
These everyday family moments help shape not only confident kittens, but loving companions ready for a lifetime of friendship, comfort, and family life.
